  • How Caleb Jones Leaves Benedcitne as a Scoring Legend

By Jeff Moeller/Special to the Prep Sports Report | March 21, 2025
Over the past four years, Benedictine's star guard, Caleb Jones, has matured on and off the basketball court.
In fact, Jones' long-standing love affair with the game has brought him to a new comfort level, aside from his 2,288 career points. It also will help him reach another level in the near future.

  • Basketball memories

Although Benedictine Military School’s basketball team did not achieve the desired outcome in its final home game of the season, it provided another memorable opportunity for fans to watch an exceptional senior class compete one last time in front of a packed BC Gym. The sold-out crowd witnessed an intense, hard-fought battle as the Cadets took on Marist in the first round of the GHSA Class AAAA playoffs.
Seniors Caleb Jones, Robert Leonard, and John Lilly have been the cornerstones of the BC basketball program, helping lead the team to unprecedented success over the past four years. Throughout their tenure, the Cadets claimed three region championships and advanced to two GHSA Class AAAA semifinals, achievements that set the standard for future teams.
Beyond their accomplishments on the court, the character, work ethic, and leadership displayed by these players will leave a lasting legacy at BC. Jones, a four-year starter, has led the state in scoring (across all classifications) for the past two seasons. He will undoubtedly be remembered not only as one of the greatest basketball players in BC history but also as one of the most accomplished high school basketball players in Savannah’s history.

  • Caleb Jones- An Extraordinary Cadet

Trailing Marist by 13 points headed into the final quarter, the Benedictine basketball team was in a familiar position with its back against the wall and its season on the line. But as he has done so many times before, senior Caleb Jones raised his game to another level. The standout guard put his team on his shoulders to ignite a rally and drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key to tie things up with 4:27 left.
But the memorable run ended as Marist came through down the stretch with some clutch baskets and strong defense to beat the host Cadets 68-59 in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.
It was the final high school game for Jones, who led the Cadets to Final Four finishes in Class 4A the last two seasons. He scored a game-high 30 points. Ca'Ron Hall had 10 for the Cadets and Stephen Cannon added eight.
Marist improved to 21-8 on the season and will be on the road to face North Oconee on Saturday night in a second round matchup.
Jones was named the All-Greater Savannah Player of the Year last season when he led the GHSA, across all classifications, in scoring at 27.8 points per game. He's in the same position this year as he was averaging 31.8 points entering the playoffs.
Last week, he went off for 49 points in a Region 1-4A semifinal win over New Hampstead and then scored 37 in the finals at Warner Robins, leading a crazy comeback that fell short in a 61-59 setback against the Demons.
Frank Williams is a veteran coach in the city of Savannah with previous stints at Savannah High, Beach and Savannah Christian before taking over the Cadet program in the 2020-21 season. After the region tournament last week, Williams was asked how Jones compared with some of the great players he's seen in Savannah. He said Jones, who has offers from Clayton State and Georgia College & State, was right up there with the late James "Murdock" Ferguson, who led Savannah High to a state title in 1998 when Williams was an assistant working with Blue Jacket coach Tim Jordan.
"Caleb is definitely in the top two with Murdock in my opinion," Williams said. "His game is a lot different, but his will to win is exactly the same ― and I first saw that in Caleb when he was in middle school. If you could build a player you wanted to be a scorer Caleb fits the mold. He's a great student athlete who is always working diligently at his craft. I guarantee you he will be in the gym tomorrow. He might be coming in under the radar with his recruitment right now, but whatever team that signs him is going to be blessed with a great player at the collegiate level."
Jones is the son of Hamp Jones, a former standout in his college days playing for Georgia Southern. His father has been a mainstay, sitting in the same spot in the Benedictine gym for every game. Caleb was disappointed that his high school career was ending earlier than he hoped, but he took the loss with a mature perspective.
"We didn't go out and play like we wanted to at the start tonight, but I'm proud of how we fought back and got back into the game in the fourth quarter," Jones said. "We lost, but at the end of the day I love my teammates. We've had a great run and I'll always be back to support the program.
"Playing here for coach Williams has helped shape me into the player and person I am today," Jones said. "He's also my English teacher ― so he helped me develop my game mentally and physically and also in the classroom. We have a tight bond and I can talk to him about anything."

The region basketball tournament location was changed due to a last-minute bylaws change by the Region 1-AAAA Athletics Directors. But even in the face of adversity, the Cadets showed a lot of heart, making them such a strong team. Despite the home-field advantage for Warner Robins, the Cadets fought until the end before losing, 61-59. The Cadets are staying strong and gearing up for the GHSA State Tournament on at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in BC Gym. Hosting Marist from Region 5-AAAA will be a big challenge, but it also offers a great opportunity to show their resilience.
The cookout from the BCAA before the game Feb. 19 is a great way to rally support. Enjoy a hearty meal and support your Cadets!

Caleb Jones is truly an exceptional player; his 2,000-point achievement is a testament to his talent and dedication. His ability to thrive under pressure, even when facing double or triple teams, reflects his high basketball IQ and maturity on the court. His versatility and adaptability allow him to adjust his play to counter different defenses, a skill that distinguishes the greats from the good.
It's also inspiring to see Caleb prioritize his team over individual success. That mindset strengthens his leadership role and elevates the performance of those around him, making him a well-rounded and impactful player both on and off the court.

Recent memories – and not fond ones – provided all the motivation Benedictine star guard Caleb Jones needed on Tuesday night for the host Cadets against the New Hampstead boys basketball team.
The Phoenix had defeated the Cadets in all three of their meetings last season, when Benedictine lost only eight games total. The first two were each decided by one point. New Hampstead won the Region 3-4A regular-season title and later the tournament championship by virtue of a four-point victory.
Tuesday night wasn’t close, as Jones poured in a game-high 30 points and junior point guard Micah Williams 20 as Benedictine won 62-47 in the Region 1-4A contest.
“I had to work very hard,” Jones, a senior, said of his 30 points. “That team had beaten us last year three times in a row, so it’s kind of personal. We wanted to come out aggressive from the start and just win the game.”
Benedictine improved to 14-2, 3-0 in the region in extending its win streak to five games. New Hampstead dropped to 10-9, 2-1 in the region.
“Tonight, we struggled on the offensive side of the ball,” Phoenix first-year coach Christopher Owens said. “We had a hard time making shots. We struggled getting in transition. (The Cadets) executed well. They played good ball.”
Both teams were a bit off-target in the first quarter – perhaps because of the stakes and the energized, packed gymnasium. The Cadets led just 9-6 and benefitted from the Phoenix’s 10 turnovers.
“It could have been the magnitude of the game that disturbed them a little bit,” Benedictine coach Frank Williams said. “They are a very well-coached ballclub. They shoot the ball extremely well. I think we were just fortunate that they didn’t make (more of) the shots that they took early on. It wasn’t because of our defense so much because they got open looks.”
Benedictine found more of a rhythm in the second quarter, when on consecutive possessions, Jones drilled a 3-pointer from the left baseline with a hand in his face, then came up with the basketball in his hands after a wild scramble and scored inside for a 17-10 BC advantage with about 4:30 left.
Jones later hit another 3-pointer, then Micah Williams made a steal and a fast-break layup before Jones closed out the first half by sinking all three free throws after an attempt beyond the arc with 4.3 seconds left.
Benedictine outscored New Hampstead 18-5 in the second quarter to lead 27-11 at the half.
“That’s just chemistry right there,” Jones said of the second-quarter surge. “We work on that in practice all the time.”
Jones said that getting to the foul line early helped get him going, and he also trusts his teammates to score. He entered the night averaging 31.9 points per game, so when asked if he feels like he has to carry the load, Jones said, “It’s no pressure at all.”
The Phoenix lost ground in the third quarter, when they were outscored 20-15. Rashawn Truell, who led New Hampstead in the game with 16 points, sank a couple of 3-pointers. Jones got the final score of the period with a 3-pointer after working through a double-team for the Cadets’ largest lead to that point, 47-26.
“He’s seen double-teams before, he’s seen triple-teams, and I don’t blame them,” Frank Williams said. “I’d send the kitchen sink at him, too. He was pressing, but I think it was because he knew the magnitude of the game.”
The coach said that Jones badly wants to win and puts in the work with that goal in mind.
“What I tell (college) coaches when they call asking for Caleb is that he’s a constant basketball player,” Frank Williams said. “After practice, he’s going to practice (more). When his shot’s not ready, he’s working on his shot. He’s always in the gym. Nobody wants to win more than Caleb. If he was pressing, it was because he was trying to accomplish our goals as a team.”
The team won three playoff games last season and advanced to the GHSA Class 4A state semifinals, while New Hampstead reached the quarterfinals, losing to eventual champion North Oconee.
Before either team can think about playoffs, there is still the regular-season slate, including the Jan. 28 rematch at New Hampstead.
“I’m happy to be a part of it. Hopefully, we can be on the winning side next time,” Owens said of the Phoenix facing their region rivals.
As for facing Jones in particular, the New Hampstead coach said, “He’s a good one, he’s a good ballplayer.” Owens also promised, after Jones’ productive night against the Phoenix defense, “We’ll have something better for him next time.”
Among those in attendance was Georgia Southern men’s basketball coach Charlie Henry and some of his assistant coaches. Jones’ father, Hamp Jones, was a four-year standout for the Eagles. The 6-foot-7 forward was voted to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team for the 1996-97 season, and to the all-conference third team in 1999-2000.
Caleb Jones said he didn’t know before the game that the coaches would be there. He also said that he has college offers from Georgia College & State in Milledgeville, and from Clayton State in Morrow.
  • Exciting basketball season for the Cadets

The Cadets are off to an impressive start in Region 1-AAAA play with victories over Wayne County, Perry, and New Hampstead. BC's 62-47 victory over New Hampstead extended its home winning streak to 12 games, a run dating to last season, and improved its overall record to 14-3. This consistency on offense has been pivotal, with the team averaging 66.6 points per game during the streak. Senior Caleb Jones has been exceptional, averaging 31.9 points per game and tallying 533 points so far this season. His career total of 1996 points underscores his remarkable talent and sustained performance over the years.
The Cadets' blend of speed, athleticism, and solid team chemistry makes them a formidable force on the court. The Cadets will travel to Wayne County on Saturday; JV 2 p.m./Varsity 3:30 p.m.
  • Exciting Win Over Calvary's Twin Towers

It was standing room only at a packed Benedictine gymnasium Saturday night as the Cadets hosted Calvary Day in a battle of two teams that are primed to make postseason runs. Calvary, with 6-foot-11 junior Kuol Deng leading a balanced lineup, clawed back into the game after a big first quarter deficit, but BC, led by senior star Caleb Jones and junior guard Micah Williams, was up for the challenge as the Cadets made big plays down the stretch and held on for a 67-62 non-region victory. The game could serve as a pivotal point in the seasons of both squads.
Benedictine is coming off back-to-back Class 4A Final Four appearances and the Cadets improved to 13-2, with a 2-0 record in Region 1-4A play. Calvary Day, which entered the week ranked No. 5 among Class A-3A Private Schools in the state by Sandysspiel.com, fell to 8-5 overall, with a 5-0 mark in Region 3-3A play.
Jones once again leads the state of Georgia, across all classifications, in scoring with 31.9 points per game. He poured in 27 of his game-high 31 points in the first half against Calvary with an array of baffling moves that led to open jumpers and drives to the basket — including a steal en route to a breakaway dunk that ignited the raucous home crowd. Junior point guard Micah Williams had 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter as he made six big free throws down the stretch. Senior John Lily was a spark with his defense and hustle and added eight points, with a huge basket in the final minutes to spark the Cadets.
"I was impressed by our composure and poise at the end of the game," said BC coach Frank Williams, in his fifth season leading the program. "Our guys rose to the occasion, and that's a trademark of BC boys. Calvary Day is very well coached, they play so smooth and organized and they came on strong down the stretch. We just tried to win each possession in the final minutes."
Benedictine is off to a great start with Jones leading the way, but the addition of Williams as the starting point guard has been instrumental in the team's success. Williams, a standout defensive back whose football offers include North Carolina and Georgia Tech, missed last basketball season with a shoulder injury. He is averaging 9.5 points, 4.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game.
"Micah is just a phenomenal athlete who can play every sport, and he's getting better every game as he settles in as our point guard," Frank Williams said.
Jones is scoring at the 31.9 clip, while averaging 6.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.5 steals per contest. He was in top form against Calvary.
"The atmosphere was crazy here tonight, all of our fans came out and they were going nuts," Jones said. "I played well in the first half. The second half was different and we had to focus on getting the win. Our key is our chemistry, and I think we have the talent to win the whole thing this year."

Benedictine delivered a dominant performance and picked up another impressive victory on Saturday, defeating the Charlotte Latin Hawks 60-47.
Caleb Jones had another stellar game, scoring 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting and adding six rebounds. This marks his tenth consecutive game in which he’s scored at least a third of Benedictine’s total points. Micah Williams also contributed significantly, finishing with 13 points and five assists.
With this win, Benedictine improves their record to 9-1, continuing their strong season.

Despite the loss, Benedictine still got an impressive performance from Caleb Jones, who dropped a double-double of 22 points and ten rebounds. The match was Jones' 34th in a row with at least ten points. John Lilly was another key player, going 6 for 10 on his way to 12 points and seven rebounds.

  • Cadets 8-0

It was a highly anticipated matchup of two of the top high school basketball teams in the Coastal Empire as Benedictine met up with St. Andrew's in the Savannah Christian Classic.
Benedictine, a school known more for its football program, has become one of the top programs in the state under Head Coach Frank Williams as the Cadets have reached the GHSA state semifinals in the last two seasons. St. Andrew's won back-to-back GIAA state crowns before a run to the Final Four last year.
The matchup also featured two of the best players in the state as BC senior Caleb Jones, the Coastal Empire Player of the Year who led the entire state in scoring last year at 27.8 points per game went up against Lion senior Zayden Edwards, who was named the GIAA Class 3A State Player of the Year last season.

St. Andrew's lead by a point after one quarter, but Benedictine took control in the second stanza and led by 13 at the half en route to a dominating 72-43 victory. The Cadets improved to 8-0 on the season as the Lions fell to 7-2.
Jones, who leads the GHSA in scoring again this season at 35.3 points per game, poured in 30 points, with six rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Micah Williams, the junior who is also a star defensive back for the Cadets and holds football scholarship offers including North Carolina and Georgia Tech, had a big game for BC with 16 points, six assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals. Sophomore Ejay Washington pulled eight rebounds and added eight points.
"The key for us was the first three minutes of the second half," said Jones, who has an offer from Clayton State. "We came out playing scrappy and playing good defense. We took this game personally because they were talking a lot (on social media) before the game, so we wanted to win this one. I thought we played well, and I think this is the first time BC has ever started a season at 8-0."
Despite their 8-0 record and deep playoff run the last two seasons, Benedictine wasn't in the Top 10 in the state rankings, and Williams thinks the Cadets are often overlooked, but he said that doesn't matter.
"We're not worried about promoting ourselves, we try to do that on the court," Williams said. "We've got a lot of experience and have a lion of a scorer in Caleb, and we're developing other scorers to complement him. What I love is that the boys at BC take a lot of pride in representing our school and our team ― that's one of the keys to our success."

  • The Cadets 7-0

Benedictine continued their dominant run with a commanding 53-27 victory over the Savannah Christian Raiders on Friday, extending their win streak to seven games. Caleb Jones was the standout performer, leading the way with an impressive 30 points on 13-of-24 shooting. He also contributed five rebounds and four steals, further solidifying his pivotal role in the team's success. Remarkably, Jones has now scored at least a third of Benedictine's points in each of their last seven games.
Micah Williams also played a key role in the victory, contributing four points and a career-high seven assists. His playmaking helped facilitate the team's offensive flow and underscored the overall team effort in the win.
