The Savannah Morning News holds the Coastal Empire High School Sports Awards Banquet at the end of the school year to honor top high school athletes. This prestigious event celebrates the achievements of student-athletes from the region, recognizing first-team selections across various sports. At the banquet sponsored by Chatham Orthopaedic Associates, the Player of the Year is also announced. For Cross Country, three Cadets were honored as 1st Team: John Dodson, Asher Herrin, and Cole Minnich. Honorable Mention selections were Tucker Hollis, William Hoffman and Nikos Hanks.
Congratulations to Herbert “Third” Scroggins III on being selected as one of the 12 finalists for the prestigious Touchdown Club of Atlanta’s 2024 Mr. Georgia Award. It's a huge recognition of his hard work and dedication. Best wishes to him as he continues his football career at the University of Miami! What an exciting journey ahead!

Eight teams from the Southeast will compete for the championship. The teams, parents, and coaches are invited to mass at 10:00 AM on Sunday followed by a brunch. The Cadets' first game is 12/27 at 7:30 PM vs Archbishop Ryan. Congratulations to Benedictine Military School's basketball team for its impressive victory at the 2024 Heathwood Hall Winter Classic in Columbia, S.C.! BC triumphed with a 75-53 victory over Patriot High School in the championship game, thanks in large part to the stellar performance of senior Caleb Jones. Jones put on an incredible show, scoring 57 points, and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Throughout the tournament, he averaged 43 points per game and is currently averaging 41 points per game for the undefeated Cadets (4-0).
In the opening round, Benedictine defeated Dillon Christian, 75-30, with Jones contributing 38 points. In the second round, BC took down host Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, 54-37, with Jones again leading the way with 34 points. Sophomore Ejay Washington also stood out, scoring nine points in the first game and earning a spot on the all-tournament team.
Next up, the Cadets will face Hilton Head High School on December 10. The team is off to a strong start and looking to build on its early success!
On Wednesday, eight Benedictine Military School seniors signed national letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers in college. Baseball: Jackson Austin (Gordon State College), Brooks Bradshaw (Emmanuel University), Landon Ludwig (Davidson College), Jack Murphy (Saint Vincent College), T.J. Windsor (Belmont Abbey College Football: Herbert "Third" Scroggins III (University of Miami), Jacobe Ward (Auburn University) Wrestling: Zachary Krauss (Belmont Abbey College) This was the early signing date! Two former Benedictine standouts delivered stellar performances for their respective colleges. Luke Kromenhoek '24, a true freshman quarterback at Florida State, made his first collegiate start unforgettable. Kromenhoek threw for 209 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Seminoles to a 41-7 victory over Charleston Southern. He has been named the starter for the Seminoles' game against Florida in Tallahassee at 7 p.m. Nov. 30. Gavin Stewart '20, a senior kicker at Georgia Southern, tied his career high with 14 points in the Eagles' victory over Coastal Carolina. He converted four of five field goals and nailed both points after touchdowns (PAT), marking just the second time in his college career that he's hit four field goals in a game. Stewart's reliability continues to be a key asset for the Eagles this season. Georgia Southern hosts Appalachian State at 6 p.m. Saturday.
With the conclusion of many fall sports, the winter sports are in action. The Savannah Morning News selected the top area basketball player to watch. Senior "Player of the Year" Caleb Jones and sophomore Ejay Washington were high on the list! The opening game for the Cadets is at 8 p.m. Nov. 30 against Groves in the Enmarket Arena Tournament. The wrestling team had an outstanding day in its opening home dual match with big wins over Windsor Forest, 71-12, Savannah Christian, 73-6, and Jenkins, 58-24. BC travels to Effingham County High School on Saturday for the Blue Line Duals at 9 a.m.. BC's swim team is practicing getting ready for its competition. It's going to be a great season!
For week 11 in high school football, Benedictine's senior Connor Ferguson was selected by Kohl's as the National Player of the Week. Ferguson was 3/3 field goals (52, 38, 35 yards), 52-yard field goal (school record), 46-yard punt average (2 punts), 7/8 kickoffs for touchbacks, and 5/5 extra points. Kohl's out of Waukesha, Wisconsin is the nation's leader in camps for kickers, punters, and long snappers.
Benedictine Military School's sport shooting team finished its season as the Georgia Independent Athletic Association runner-up. Savannah Country Day won the state championship. BC defeated Savannah Christian in a shoot-off for second place. The top BC scorer was Mills Hollis (sport shooting, skeet, trap out of 100 in each discipline) 88, 98, 98. Hollis finished third as the HOA (high individual). Second for the Cadets was Jim Reynolds Morrison 84, 98, 93, third was Gavin Walmsley 82, 95, 93, fourth was Lucas McKenzie 84, 93, 92, and fifth was Chaz Palmer 81, 99, 88. High scorers in each discipline were: Sport - Hollis 4th and Owen Washburn 6th. Top leaders in skeet - 3rd Palmer, 5th Hollis, 6th Morrison, 8th Drake Cooper and 10th Sam Anderson. The top shooters in trap were 2nd Hollis and 10th Walmsley. Mills Hollis and Jim Reynolds Morrison were honored as First-Team All-State by the GIAA.
Benedictine Military School's football team dominated New Hampstead, 44-22, on Oct. 31 to clinch a No. 3 seed in the GHSA Class AAAA playoffs, which start Nov. 15. It was the final regular-season game for BC, which improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the region. A highlight of the evening was BC senior kicker Connor Ferguson, who was 3-for-3 at field goals, while converting all five of his PATs. His 52-yard field goal in the third quarter was a school record, breaking his previous record (a 50-yard field goal) in a victory over Burke County earlier this season.
Benedictine Military School was honored to have Mr. Bryan Passink, BC Class of 1991, return to campus Tuesday to speak about his experiences as a former basketball player at both Benedictine and the University of Alabama. He shared how he developed “an attitude of gratitude” as he progressed from BC to Alabama to playing professional basketball in Israel. He advised to “embrace the hard” challenges in life. Mr. Passink was a four-year starter at Benedictine and is BC’s all-time leading scorer. He was inducted into the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018. He is in his 22nd year as the men’s basketball color analyst for the Crimson Tide Sports Network and works for a biotech company in medical sales.
Benedictine Military School’s Raider team hosted the Area 1 Region Raider Challenge on Oct. 12. There were 21 teams representing 11 high schools. BC Maroon won the region championship and BC White finished second. Both teams represented the region at the state championship at Spalding County High School on Nov. 2, as BC Maroon placed third, and BC White finished seventh. The competitions require teamwork, discipline, and leadership. The teams also had a successful trip to the ARMY Raider Nationals at Fort Knox, Ky., on October 24-27, as BC Maroon placed seventh and BC White placed 22nd in the Master’s Division. We are extremely proud of our Cadet Raiders and how they performed. It is always amazing to see how hard this team works and how much effort they put into every event!
Benedictine Military School's football team has rearranged two Region 1-AAAA games in an effort to complete the schedule. On Oct.11, BC will play host to Ware County at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. It is Homecoming for the Cadets! The New Hampstead game, originally scheduled for the Oct. 11, will be played at 7 p.m. Oct. 31 at Memorial Stadium. Senior Night will remain Oct. 25 as the Cadets host Perry.
Rain = Mud! The Cadets overcame a muddy course after a day of rain! They must continue to trust the training process as the Cadets continue to earn personal records and win another meet. The Stinger Invitational hosted 12 teams and 15 schools. BC finished strong with a score of 24 - #1 John Dodson 16:05.84, #2 Cole Minnich 16:15.36, #4 Asher Herrin 17:15.63, #6 Nikos Hanks 17:37.60 and #11 Will Hoffman 18:48.42! This is great preparation for the GHSA Class AAAA State Championship in Carrollton at 2 p.m. Nov. 9. Congratulations!
With the typical sideline chaos of a high school football game all around him, Benedictine's Connor Ferguson is always a picture of calm within the storm. His career-long 50-yard field goal against Burke County was the latest in a long line of big-time plays for Ferguson, who is ranked No. 1 in Georgia and No. 7 in the nation in the Kohl's National Kicker Rankings. He is 3-for-3 on field-goal attempts this season, with another blast from 48 yards in a season-opening loss to Rabun County, while converting all 11 of his PAT tries. He has forced touchbacks on 11 of his 17 kickoffs, while averaging 44 yards with his high-flying, booming punts. Ferguson has offers from Valdosta State, Arkansas State, and Murray State, but has the potential to be a Power-Five player. Pack the stands as Ferguson and the Cadets host Westminster at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at Memorial Stadium.
The Savannah Morning News recognizes the returning high school athletes in each sport. Among the 19 talented male runners were four Cadets. The athletes are John Dodson, Asher Herrin, Cole Minnich, and Nikos Hanks. The four led the Cadets to first place at the Frazier-Hite Invite Aug. 29 against 16 teams. Congratulations to Dodson for first place (16:56.6), Minnich for third, Herrin for fifth, Hanks for eighth, and Will Hoffman for 12th. BC had a total score of 29 points - 56 points ahead of the second-place team.
Congratulations to Benedictine Military School's sport shooting team for its outstanding performances at the GIAA qualifiers for the state tournament Oct. 30-Nov. 2 at Forest City Gun Club. At the first shoot, BC won by 42 targets over second place finisher SCPS. Mills Hollis was HOA for skeet and Lucas McKenzie was HOA for trap. At the second qualifier, BC again finished strong placing first with the top five Cadets being; juniors Mills Hollis 193/200, Gavin Walmsley 181/200, Jack McKenzie 178/200, sophomore Chaz Palmer 176/200, and senior Drake Cooper 174/200.

This is an exciting season for the Cadets. The next game is Sat., Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. at Georgia Southern University's Paulson Stadium in Statesboro. The Cadets will ply Rabun Gap in the Erk Russell Classic.
NO. 1 TWELVE YEARS IN A ROW! According to the Georgia Athletic Directors Association, Benedictine has the top boys' athletic program in all of South Georgia across all GHSAVclassifications "A" through "AAAAAAA." Congratulations to our Cadets and coaches for another incredible athletic year.
Benedictine has captured one team national championship and 21 team state championships overall in eight different sports, including 17 state championships since 2012. (This number does not include the numerous individual state championships.)
